How do you find about the system architecture of your Unix like machine?

Run the uname  command via the terminal and see the output

Usage: uname [OPTION]…
Print certain system information.  With no OPTION, same as -s.

  -a, –all                print all information, in the following order,
                             except omit -p and -i if unknown:
  -s, –kernel-name        print the kernel name
  -n, –nodename           print the network node hostname
  -r, –kernel-release     print the kernel release
  -v, –kernel-version     print the kernel version
  -m, –machine            print the machine hardware name
  -p, –processor          print the processor type or “unknown”
  -i, –hardware-platform  print the hardware platform or “unknown”
  -o, –operating-system   print the operating system
      –help     display this help and exit
      –version  output version information and exit

On the Mac output looks like, see the x68_64 keyword for 64 bit

uname -a
Darwin mymac.local 11.2.0 Darwin Kernel Version 11.2.0: Tue Aug  9 20:54:00 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1699.24.8~1/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64

On the Linux output looks like, see the i686_64 keyword for 64 bit

uname -a
Linux imobile.com 2.6.35.13-xenU #2 SMP Mon May 9 23:16:02 EDT 2011 i686 GNU/Linux
